Airport
To the city centre of Warsaw is 5km. Travel between the airport and city can be by taxi or by local bus.
Currency
The Polish currency is zloty. In Warsaw or Krakow, it is relatively easy to cash travellers cheques and obtain cash advances from credit cards.
Electricity
Sockets are continental type 2-pin round. Voltage is 220V 50Hz.
Health
Medical care is available in hospitals and outpatient clinics. For emergency ambulance (on standby 24 hours), call 999. Some hotels have their own medical services. Prescriptions may be obtained at any chemist; they stock Polish as well as foreign drugs.
Telephones
Direct connect to most places from larger cities. Where there is no direct dialing, it is necessary to connect through long distance or international operators. Phone calls may be placed from private telephones, hotels, post office or public booths. Calls from public booths require tokens called "zetony", or telephone cards.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in restaurants and cafés, porter's services in hotels, and train stations. Amount tendered at traveller's discretion.
Visa
Citizens of Autstralia do not need a visa to Poland to stay for up to 90 days.
Warsaw
The capital of Poland - almost completely destroyed during the last world war, and was painstakingly restored to its former splendour. The Old Town complex, Royal Castle, Lazienki and Wilanow Palaces fascinate all visitors. Several museums contain priceless collections that survived the War.
Krakow
One of the greatest treasures of Europe was for several centuries the former capital of Poland. Its mediaeval walls, buildings, churches and Wawel Royal Castle escaped the damages of World War II. An aura of Royal splendour still remains in the city. Krakow is known in Poland and abroad as the Polish Rome. It is listed by UNESCO as "city of the world's cultural heritage".
Poznan
One of the oldest Polish cities (10th century), Poznan is also well known in the world as the trade and industrial centre. For more than 50 years, the International Fair has been held there. Its gothic Cathedral, Renaissance Town Hall (one of the most beautiful in Europe) and the restored Old Town with its charming colourful ancient merchants' houses create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Zakopane
The busiest and most popular alpine resort is situated in a beautiful wooded valley at the foot of the towering peaks of the Tatra Mountains in the south, with the magnificent ridge of Mount Giewont. The whole region has preserved its typical architecture charmingly composed into the landscape.
